Arnae Hairston: White House summit on youth employment

Arnae Hairston, an 18-year-old graduate of Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake's Youth Retail Merchandising Program, had a unique opportunity to share her employment story yesterday in front of the U.S. Secretaries of Education, Labor, Agriculture and other high-ranking officials as part of a White House summit on youth employment.

Arnae Hairston At the event - her first speaking engagement - she spoke candidly about the importance of giving young adults the opportunity to earn a paycheck, and described how the training and retail certification she received through Goodwill(r) has impacted her and her family.

NEXT GOODWILL CEO NAMED 

 

Lisa Rusyniak, Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. current Chief Operating Officer, has been named as the local non-profits next President and CEO.

Ms. Rusyniak will assume the new position at years end (December 2011) when current President and CEO, Marge Thomas steps down.

Ms. Rusyniak began her career with Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. back in 1997 when she was hired as the agency’s Director of Marketing and Disability Services. She quickly rose through the ranks and assumed her position as Chief Operating Officer in 2006.

As COO, Ms. Rusyniak oversees Goodwill’s workforce development, human resources, and marketing and development divisions. She holds an undergraduate degree from Salisbury University and a Masters in Business Management from Wilmington University and has participated in The Greater Baltimore Committee’s Leadership Program and Goodwill Industries International’s Executive Development Program.

When asked about assuming the responsibility of running a multi-million dollar organization Ms. Rusyniak responded that she was eager to assume the challenges of her new position and thanked her mentor, Ms. Thomas, for helping her achieve such great success.

Ms. Rusyniak commented, “It is an honor to be entrusted with the continued success and prosperity of such a prestigious and valuable organization. I thank the board of directors for their faith in me and for giving me this tremendous opportunity, I know that were it not for Marge (Thomas) I would never have been given this chance.”

Goodwill’s New Mission

Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. prepares people to secure and retain employment and build successful independent lives.

For over 90 years Goodwill has worked tirelessly to help those facing economic hardship find gainful employment.  As the needs of Marylanders has changed so too has Goodwill. As one of the largest nonprofits in the region Goodwill has always proactively looked to reflect to the growing needs of the community. It is in this tradition of serving people in need to the highest degree possible that Goodwill’s new mission is:  Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. prepares people to secure and retain employment and build successful independent lives.

“Goodwill’s new mission defines what we’ve always done best—help people in need gain employment,” said Marge Thomas, President & CEO of Goodwill.  “We have always been well known for our retail stores and for collecting donations, and we hope our new mission will educate the public on how the proceeds from their donations are used.”

Last year, Goodwill helped over 2,100 people get jobs.  The organization also employs over 650 individuals in the Baltimore metropolitan region and the Eastern Shore through its 25 retail stores and 9 career centers.

Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. will continue to offer the general public access to a wealth of services with the ultimate goal of helping people become gainfully employed as well as help those individuals gain the skills needed to build a future.

Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake is pleased to announce a new partnership with College Hunks Hauling for donors needing at home pick up of goods they would like to donate. Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. is now partnering with College Hunks Hauling to offer discounted rates to pick up College Hunkscomputers, furniture, clothing, and other household items and deliver them to your local Goodwill within 48 hours of your request.

  • College Hunks Hauling will provide fee-based pick up option to our donors.
  • College Hunks Hauling will make the donor pick-ups for all areas without day restrictions, and can provide a 2-hour arrival window.
  • In addition to picking up donations within 48 hours, College Hunks Hauling will also be able to pick up any non-donatable items such as appliances, sleeper sofas, mattresses, and any other items Goodwill does not accept, and will be able to remove all items from wherever they are located on the property.
  • Donations will be dropped at Goodwill stores. Stores will have the autonomy to select donated items they feel will sell.
  • We accept any unsellable donations that fit into one of our recycle streams such as metal, plastic, computers, monitors, and cardboard. Even though these items may not be in any condition to sell on the sales floor, they still have value and can be sold on the back end of our business.
  • Goodwill donors utilizing the service will receive a $15-$30 discount on hauling fees depending on the size of the load ($15 off half truckload or less, $30 off half truckload or more).
