Donation Questions

Q: What do you do with my donations?

A: All items that are donated to us that we are able to resell are put out for sale in our stores. The revenue from the sale of these items goes towards our job training programs for people with disadvantages and disabilities.

Q: Can I make a cash donation to Goodwill?

A: Goodwill gladly accepts cash gifts as well as donated goods. If you would like to make a cash gift, you can donate today.

Q: What kind of donations will Goodwill accept and not accept?

A: Here is a list of acceptable and non-acceptable donation items.

Q: If I lose my donation receipt, will Goodwill replace it?

A: We ask that individuals keep track of the items they donate. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide replacement donation receipts.

Q: How much can I write off on my taxes for my donation of used goods?

A: Donations to Goodwill are tax deductible; however, Goodwill is prohibited from placing a value on your contribution. IRS regulations require that the donor be the one to determine the “fair market” value of the donation using purchase receipts or some method of calculating the value at resale (like online auction sites) . This fair market value is what you would be able to obtain for the item(s) if you sold them yourself, or they were sold in a thrift store or consignment shop. Please note that clothing loses value dramatically at the time of original purchase, similar to a car, so the amount you can deduct is often far less than you paid. If your contribution is valued at $250 or more, you must retain your donation receipt. Please talk with your tax preparer for more details.

Q: Do I need an independent appraisal for my donation of used goods?

A: You will need an independent appraisal and an IRS form 8283 if you are claiming a donation of $500 or more. If you’d like to obtain independent appraisals for items you believe to be valued over $500, visit: http://www.appraisalfoundation.org/
